OUTCOME TWO

In this section, students will focus on analyzing visual communications. You will look at the manner in which the audience is targeted and evaluate whether the purpose is achieved within the context of the visual communication.

Students will analyse the use of design elements and principles along with media, materials and methods. Students will learn to use the appropriate terminology that demonstrates an understanding of the effectiveness and impact of visual communications.

KEY QUESTIONS:

The following key questions are vital to effective visual communication analysis:

  • What? What elements, principles, materials, methods and media have been used?
  • Why? Why have the elements, principles, methods and media been used?
  • What effect? What effect do the elements, principles, materials, methods and media have on the visual communication and how do they assist in achieving the purpose and attracting the audience?

PART ONE – The Visual Analysis Grid

  To begin with, students are asked to begin their first visual analysis with reference to ONE visual communication. The visual analysis grid highlights all the required areas that should be considered for an effective response.

PART TWO – Elements & Principles

  Effective analysis indicates not only the ability to interpret the audience, context, purpose & other factors that have an impact on visual communication, but also the ability to support your observation with evidence.You may believe that the purpose of the visual communication is to advertise, but can you support the assertion?Recognizing the reasons behind the application of design elements and principles or the use of media, materials & methods, will assist you in developing insightful analysis.

PART THREE – Analysing media, methods & materials

  The material from which a visual communication is constructed can provide strong clues to the purpose, context and audience. For example, visual communications that are designed for the outdoors have quite different material and production needs to those designed for indoor use. Observing the material used in the construction will identify the context of the visual communication.
